What Legal Research Platforms May I Use for Research This Summer or After Graduation?

Law students often ask us about whether or not they are able to use their access to WestlawNext, Bloomberg Law, and Lexis Advance over the summer.  Each company has its own policy regarding summer use:

Lexis Advance and Bloomberg Law:

Lexis Advance and Bloomberg Law have no restrictions on summer use of your student account, and you don’t need to do anything to extend your use over the summer. You can use your student password for your summer job or externship, regardless of where you are working.

You can use Thomson Reuters’ products, including Westlaw and Practical Law, over the summer for non-commercial research. You can turn to these resources to gain understanding and build confidence in your research skills, but you cannot use them in situations where you are billing a client.  Examples of permissible uses for your academic password include:

Summer coursework

Research assistant assignments

Law Review or Journal research

Moot Court research

Non-Profit work

Clinical work

Externship sponsored by the school

You do not have to do anything to gain access to these tools over the summer, and they will be accessible using your student password. If you have any questions about what is a permissible use, please contact our Thomson Reuters Academic Account Manager, Mollie Benson at
