Eric Young - Law Library Director and Assistant Dean

Eric Young joined the University of South Dakota School of Law as its Law Library Director, Assistant Dean, and Senior Lecturer in May 2016.  Immediately prior to his appointment at USD, he served for 5 ½ years as the Assistant Dean for Law Library & Technology Services and Assistant Professor of Law at the Shepard Broad College of Law, Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  Eric served for two years as a federal law clerk to the late, Honorable S. Arthur Spiegel, United States District Court Judge for the Southern District of Ohio, as an Attorney Advisor for the Social Security Administration, and as an associate attorney for a mid-sized Dayton, Ohio law firm and small, rural Kentucky law firm.  As Assistant Dean and Assistant Professor at the Shepard Broad College of Law, Eric taught Agency, Civil Rights Litigation, and Employment Discrimination as well as Advanced Legal Research. 

Eric grew up in Southwestern Ohio, earning his B.A. from Miami University (Ohio), his M.L.S. from Indiana University, Bloomington, and his J.D., magna cum laude, from the Salmon P. Chase College of Law, Northern Kentucky University.

When not working, Eric enjoys spending time with his husband of fifteen years, Heath, and their three dogs - Tank, a Miniature Pinscher; Piper, a Pomeranian-Jack Russel Mix; and Ricky, a Yorkshire Terrier.  He also takes some pleasure in playing golf poorly, is an avid baseball fan and baseball card collector, and enjoys tootling around in his1957 Ford Thunderbird.

 

Sarah Kammer - Head of Public, Faculty & Student Services

Sarah Kammer assumed the position of Head of Public, Faculty and Student Services in July 2014.  Prior to being selected to fill this position, Sarah served as a temporary library assistant and as a volunteer with the USD McKusick Law Library.  She has also volunteered at the University of Nebraska Schmid Law Library and the Nebraska State Library in Lincoln, Nebraska.  Sarah worked part-time in the reference department at the Lewis & Clark Boley Law Library in Portland, Oregon prior to moving to South Dakota.  She has also been employed as an intellectual property attorney in Cleveland, Ohio and as an attorney and office manager in a general practice firm in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Daniel Burniston – Head of Collection and Technical Services

Daniel Burniston began work at the University of South Dakota McKusick Law Library in July 2015. Prior to joining the Law Library, Daniel served as the Interlibrary Loan and Electronic Reserves Manager, and Interim Archives Manager at the University of South Dakota University Libraries. Before joining the University of South Dakota, he held a position as a public library director, as well as responsibilites including technical services and circulation.

Education:

M.L.I.S., Library and Information Science, University of Pittsburgh.

Karyl Knodel - Serials Librarian

Karyl Knodel began work as a Library Technician at USD in the McKusick Law Library in June 1975 and became serials librarian in 1982.  In her over 40 years of service, she has been responsible for the receipt, processing and tracking of serials publications and preparing them for patron use. In 2014, Karyl transitioned to working part-time in this capacity.

BA, Library Science, Westmar College (LeMars, IA) & Morningside College (Sioux City, IA).  

 

Gina Mairose - Library Administrative Assistant (Temp)

Gina Mairose became part of the McKusick Law Library team in January 2016. This is Gina’s seventh year at USD as she completed both her undergraduate and graduate studies in English at USD. As a graduate student, Gina taught lower-level English classes for five semesters and also worked at the USD Writing Center.  Gina will be helping the Law Library with a variety of administrative tasks and will also assist in providing service at the Circulation/Reference Desk when needed.
