What Information Do I need to Locate South Dakota Legislative History?

What information do I need to find the legislative history of a bill or a South Dakota law on the Legislative Research Council (LRC) website?

  • You will need the year (Session) that the bill was introduced or the legislation was enacted, and the bill numberAt the LRC website, go to Legislative Session in the blue bar.  Select the year.  For 2007 and earlier sessions, type in the bill number and the Bill Status Report will appear.  For 2008-present, click on "Bills" and "Quick Find" and then type in the bill number.

How do I find the bill number on the LRC website?

  • If you know the year and subject of the bill, go to Legislative Session and select the year.  For 2007 and earlier sessions, select Subject Index or select "Bills" and "Full List", ctrl F, to search by keyword. For 2008-present, click on "Bills" and choose Text Search or Subject Index.

  • If you know the South Dakota Codified Laws citation for a specific statute, go to Laws in the blue bar and click on Codified Laws.  Retrieve the statute.  In "Source" at the end of the statute, you will find the Session Law year, chapter and section for the original enactment and any subsequent amendments. Return to Laws and click on Session Laws. Click on the appropriate year and type in the chapter number.  The bill number will be at the top of the Session Law.

  • Return to Legislative Session and click on the yearType in the bill number.  For more information, see box below.

South Dakota Legislature Bills and Bill Status Reports (all information necessary to compile a legislative history):

Legislative Research Council > Legislative Session > Select the year and click on "Bills."  For 2008-present, search by Bill Number using "Quick Find," or by text search, the full list of bills, or the Subject Index.  For earlier sessions, type in the bill number, or click on "Bills" to search the full list of bills, the Subject Index, and in some years, by quick find and/or text search.

South Dakota Legislature Committee Minutes and Audio > Legislative Research Council > Legislative Session. Select the year and click on "Chamber or Committee."

  • For Sessions 2008 to present, choose House, Senate or Conference. Select by Committee name. In the blue bar, click on "Minutes" and the date of the meeting.  Click on the audio symbol    if available, to listen to the proceedings.
  • For earlier sessions, choose Senate or House.  Select by Committee name.  At the top of the page, click on "Minutes."  Click on the audio symbol  to listen to the proceedings for that day and time.

  • For Sessions 2008 to present, choose House or Senate. Choose "House of Representatives" or "Senate." In the blue bar, click on "Journals."  Click on the audio symbol if available, to listen to the proceedings.
